Just like PIT, Cross-hole Sonic Logging (CSL) uses the sonic wave propagation theory to check the concrete integrity of newly placed drilled shafts, seal footings and slurry or diaphragm walls. The testing can be performed on any concrete foundation provided two or more access tubes or core-holes capable of holding water are present in the foundation. CSL can also be used to check the integrity of underwater concrete piers and foundations by strapping access tubes to the sides. As opposed to the PIT, CSL can be used in a wider range of applications. It is also more accurate in quantifying the extent of the damage since it is applied to lateral cross-sections. However, CSL is more time consuming, more costly, and requires the placement of access tubes at construction time. Additional details can be found in ASTM Standard D4428/D4428M-00
